Create adorable and spooky baked cheese mummies perfect for Halloween or themed parties. These mini Babybel cheeses are wrapped in puff pastry strips to resemble mummies, brushed with egg wash for a golden finish, and decorated with candy eyes for a fun and delicious treat.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 14 Mini Babybel cheeses, rind removed

Fillings and Decorations

  • 1/3 cup honey or fruit jam
  • 28 candy eyes or mini chocolate chips

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg, beaten with 1 teaspoon water

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and prepare for baking.
  2. Prepare Puff Pastry: Lightly dust a clean countertop with flour. Roll each thawed puff pastry sheet into an 11-inch square using a rolling pin for even thickness.
  3. Cut Pastry Squares: Using a pastry cutter or sharp knife, divide each puff pastry sheet into 9 squares. Set aside 4 squares from the total to use later for mummy bandages.
  4. Add Filling: Place a small amount of honey or fruit jam on each Babybel cheese, then position the cheese honey-side down onto a pastry square. Trim extra pastry to form a neat circle around the cheese, then fold pastry over and press edges to seal. Place each sealed cheese seam-side down onto the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Wrap Mummies: Cut about 12 thin strips from the reserved pastry squares. Wrap these strips around each cheese-filled pastry to create overlapping mummy bandages, stretching or trimming to cover well.
  6. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the tops of each mummy evenly with the beaten egg wash to ensure they bake to a golden color.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted inside and the pastry is golden brown and crispy.
  8. Decorate and Serve: Remove from oven and allow to cool slightly. Affix candy eyes or mini chocolate chips onto each mummy for decoration. Serve warm for the best flavor and spooky presentation.

Notes

  • For a vegan version, substitute the egg wash with a plant-based milk or melted coconut oil.
  • You can use any small round cheese as an alternative to Mini Babybel, making sure to remove the rind if desired.
  • Fruit jams or honey add a sweet contrast to the savory cheese, but you can try mustard or chutney for a different flavor.
  • Make sure pastry strips are not too thick to maintain the delicate mummy wrapping look.
  • Candy eyes can be replaced with edible icing or drawn-on chocolate after baking.
  • Chilling the wrapped cheeses briefly before baking can help maintain the mummy shape.
