Experience the comforting flavors of a traditional Japanese Hojicha Latte, available hot or iced. This easy-to-make latte combines roasted green tea powder with milk and a touch of sweetener, perfect for a relaxing morning or afternoon treat.

Ingredients

Iced Hojicha Latte

  • 1 teaspoon hojicha powder
  • 2 oz hot water
  • 1 teaspoon liquid sweetener
  • 10 oz milk
  • Ice

Hot Hojicha Latte

  • 10 oz milk
  • 1 teaspoon hojicha powder
  • 2 oz hot water
  • 1 teaspoon liquid sweetener

Instructions

  1. Prepare Hojicha Mixture: In a small bowl or chawan, sift in hojicha powder to break up any clumps. Add hot water and liquid sweetener, then whisk using a bamboo whisk in an "M" motion for 10-15 seconds until frothy.
  2. Make Iced Latte: Fill a glass halfway with ice and pour in milk until about two-thirds full. Pour the hojicha mixture over the milk and stir gently to combine before enjoying.
  3. Heat and Froth Milk (Hot Latte): Use a milk steamer or frother to warm and froth the milk. If unavailable, heat the milk on the stovetop or microwave until it just begins to simmer, then froth using a handheld frother for 20-30 seconds or shake vigorously in a mason jar for 30 seconds until frothy.
  4. Assemble Hot Latte: Pour the prepared hojicha mixture into a mug. Add the steamed and frothed milk on top. Stir together before enjoying your warm, soothing latte.

Notes

  • Use liquid sweetener of choice such as honey, maple syrup, or agave for natural sweetness.
  • Adjust hojicha powder amount according to your taste preference for stronger or milder tea flavor.
  • For a vegan option, substitute dairy milk with almond, soy, oat, or any preferred plant-based milk.
  • If you don’t have a bamboo whisk, a small regular whisk or electric frother can be used to mix the tea.
  • When making iced latte, add ice last to avoid diluting the tea mixture prematurely.
